A Unique Scholarship
What distinguishes the La Prensa Foundation, Inc. Scholarship from
others is its minimal emphasis on a student’s GPA. Instead of requiring
students to have a high GPA to consider them for a scholarship like most scholarships
do, La Prensa Foundation, Inc. Scholarship takes into account students circumstances
that may in some way be affecting grades.
Founder Amelia Duran remembers how hard it was on her family
when her husband went to college. She explains that raising the money for
both school and a family was very difficult. Many times they both had to
work two jobs. Because multiple jobs meant less time studying, the GPA was
always at risk of slipping. However, the Duran’s couldn’t allow
that to happen because grades were very important to qualify for financial
aid. Thus, many times Amelia would take on even a third job to make sure
her husband didn’t have an excuse to stop going to college.
Because the founders lived this experience, they don’t want the same
strain on young students. Allowing the GPA to be a 2.0 for those with extenuating
circumstances will open the door for anybody who really wants to go to college.
La Prensa Foundation wants to be the organization that gives opportunities
to those that can’t get a chance anywhere else.
Types of Scholarship Funding
University & College Scholarships
Financial awards are made in the spring
and fall to local higher education institutions so that they can endorse the
students they determine are in most need.
Individual Scholarships
Scholarship applications submitted to La Prensa Foundation’s office
are reviewed by the foundation’s committee. Those individuals with a
greater need are chosen to receive a scholarship. A check is then made out
to the student’s school for tuition on behalf of the student.
Books & School Supplies Scholarships
These scholarships are awarded to students who need financial assistance
to purchase text books or school supplies for higher education classes. For
these scholarships a check is made out usually to the school’s book
store.
